Adrian,
You are right, as I'd expect. I like the image (not sure whose it is) of a leaders' job being to clear the way for other people to succeed.
There's a selflessness in that Welch alludes to. He says 'growing'. Sometimes it feels to me that it's 'growing up'.

Hi David,
You are right on both counts.....people are too caught up in the negative side of things and the media and our culture doesn't help. However, when it comes to business I think a large part of stress creation comes from poor management and leadership. I think Jack Welch said it best when he said "Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others" and I am not sure that is the case in many organisations and thus can be a large contributor to stress levels.

Do you agree?

Here's another nice one that appeared today. Although, in fairness, it is written by one of the guys dad used to really rate in Canadian business writing.
http://www.montrealgazette.com/opinion/editorials/Investment+firm+fascinating+story/2638790/story.html
Like any author, I found some fairly brutal rejection letters in my father's things. So this posthumous success of his only published book is in keeping with his sense of humour.

Tina, and all,
Thanks. He never made it to the UAE. But, in his day, I am sure he would have taken it in stride. The enthusiasm with which he used to talk about Africa and African politics around the dinner table has shaped the way I have always seen the work I have done in the Middle East. If you become a student of a place everything you learn is exciting.

Hi David -
Hope all is ticking along in London?
Just a quick note to say that I was in Abu Dhabi 2 weeks ago, in the newsroom of The National - which is staffed by more than its fair share of Canadian writers because the founding editor is Martin Newland, ex-Telegraph who also founded the National Post for Conrad B - and your Dad's name came up. Peter Cooney and Ray Beauchemin - both once Gazette men - were saying very lovely things about your Dad - in the context of colleague, boss and friend. It took about a week for the news to filter here apparently. But Jim Ferrabee was remembered, and fondly.
You were in S.Carolina at the time and I have been meaning to drop you a line about it ever since.

Hi David,
I was out onto your book (People Power) by an ex-colleague of yours. Nice work, by the way. An enjoyable read.

I've also been following your blog recently and think the article on John Terry raises some interesting questions.

I think that we live in a world where private lives are ever more scutinised, particularly if someone is in the public eye or has a position of responsibility. But surely our private lives should be private whoever we are, unless someone has done something in their 'private' life that has an adverse effect on their ability to execute their professional duties.

Do you agree?

Whether it's HR, IT, Finance etc. it's always worth the communicator spending time with colleagues to understand what their drivers and business needs are. I was lucky enough to spend 6 years in an HR consultancy - so I can empathise and work well with my HR buddies. Personally, I'm not bothered who sits where and does what. I want to understand how we can mutually support each other to increase efficiency or enhance profitability. Some of the best ways of doing that are through effective HR systems embedded and embraced by the business. HRD has it right.
